Job Description


The Director of Research and Development will bring focus to innovation, new product development, and sustaining engineering initiatives to improve the Quality, Delivery and Cost, and sustainable competitive position of the product portfolio. The R&D Director will lead, manage and direct creative and quality assurance activities to support our existing and new business opportunities in LE, Military and international markets including development and evaluation of new product lines.   The R&D Director will collaborate with operations and marketing on strategic initiatives while managing daily tasks to ensure deadlines and objectives are met.  Additionally, upon successful identification, development and evaluation of new products, the R&D director will aid in training and implementation.


1.      Lead a cross functional team and manage all aspects of innovation, new product development process, and sustaining engineering to deliver on-time and to budget new and updated products with exceptional quality which exceed the expectation of the customer and shareholder.

2.      Provide leadership and project management to prioritize workload and drive ownership at the design level.

3.      Staff and manage engineering capacity and capability of a highly effective technical team that delivers the required business results on-time, every-time.

4.      Co-lead the creation and execution of the innovation initiative, team, and process to support the strategic goals for expanded product and service solutions.

5.      Support the hard armor business unit in all product development, testing, engineering assessment and product launches.

6.      Develop detailed design requirements by obtaining voice of the customer and interpreting into voice of the designer.

7.      Lead benchmarking and reverse engineering efforts to assess competitive technologies.

8.      Provide sustaining engineering as required for existing product line including utilization of value improvement redesign efforts to maximize profitability and customer satisfaction.

9.      Plan, manage and report status of projects to the broader organization and management ·Identify product costs and manage projects accordingly using a multi stage tollgate development process.

10.   Own, deploy and continuously improve the new product development tollgate process managing projects or phases as appropriate.

11.   Maintain dynamic product development roadmaps in support of strategic initiatives including development of outside technology partners as appropriate to achieve the company goals.

12.   Interface with customers and suppliers from a technical perspective.

13.   Performs other duties as assigned to include travel to Trade Shows and Supplier locations as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of garment construction, textiles, mechanical and architectural drawing, computerized design, and basic engineering and project management.  Possess the technical competence to create designs using mechanical and electronic tools.  Must have analytical and planning skills sufficient to determine resources and time required to complete design projects.  Must possess Technical writing and computer skills sufficient to prepare system specifications, product descriptions, training publications and other job related documents. Knowledge of Military and Law Enforcement equipment and weapons systems interface with the end users and their equipment.

·        The Director of R&D will be a results-driven engineering leader with a record of outstanding results in a lean manufacturing environment.  Possess strong leadership with progressively increasing responsibilities in engineering role.  Must have strong engineering skills related to ballistic system development and management.

·        B.S. in Mechanical or Materials engineering with approx. 7-10 years of experience in product design and project management.

·        Minimum of 3-5 years managing engineering direct reports.

·        Knowledgeable in DFMA, lean manufacturing processes and demonstrated track record of releasing new products to market meeting quality and cost objectives through operations and full qualification testing.

·        Track record of innovation experience or willingness to champion innovation teams.

·        Excellent diagnostic and problem solving skills including the ability to perform and train others in root cause analysis.

·        Ability to manage conflicting priorities and focus self and team on critical assignments.

·        Must be highly self-motivated, possess executive presence in terms of managing up in the organization and be able to communicate clearly, effectively and efficiently issues that have substantial impact to the business.

·        Must be authorized to work in the USA.


·        Sitting for long periods.

·        Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper.

·        Occasional lifting of items weighing up to (25) twenty-five pounds such as files, stacks of paper, reference and other materials.

·        Moving from place to place within the office; minimum reaching for items above and below desk level.

·        Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods.
