Job Description


The Material/Research Scientist will be responsible for the development of ballistic system for LE and Military markets.  Participate as an active member of a cross-functional product development process, including Operations, Engineering, R&D and other groups.  Data mining for all current military contracts and communication of finding to cross functional departments.


1.       Evaluation of new and existing material.

2.       Design and evaluation of ballistic systems for LE, Military and International markets.

3.       Experiment design and execution. Writer and proponent of white papers form internal and external funding needs.

4.       Leads technical assignments in the areas of new product development, process development, and product/process improvement.

5.       Ensures facilities, personnel, and ballistic experiments are adhering to applicable standards.

6.       Statistical and numerical analysis, root cause analysis, risk analysis, and financial analysis.

7.       Leads the identification, assessment, validation and commercialization of new technologies.

8.       Search and evaluates different textile systems and polymer systems used for ballistic materials.

9.       Provides technical and operations risk assessment/perspectives related to new product development.

10.    Develops / maintain material balances and unit operation capability information to ensure optimal production rates, parameters, and formulas.

11.    Conducts capacity studies, enhance system reliability, and identify/implement productivity improvements, including new technologies. Develop / maintain strategic technical improvement plans for systems.

12.    Studies the effect of properties of fiber, resin on ballistic performance and the failure mechanism of high strength fibers to make better bullet proof vests.

13.    Utilize various statistical tools to analyze ballistic performance of different textile systems.

14.    Serves as a technical liaison for all levels including production /maintenance, plant technical and management resources, product engineering and R&D organization, and other plants.

15.    Develops / deliver technical training for various levels of the organization and serve as a divisional resource in cross-functional platform/technology/product teams.

16.    Interface with customers and suppliers from a technical perspective.

17.    Performs other duties as assigned to include travel to Trade Shows and Supplier locations as needed.

Quality & Customer Focus: Knowledge of garment construction, textiles, mechanical and architectural drawing, computerized design, and basic engineering and project management.  Possess the technical competence to create designs using mechanical and electronic tools.  Must have analytical and planning skills sufficient to determine resources and time required to complete design projects.  Must possess Technical writing and computer skills sufficient to prepare system specifications, product descriptions, training publications and other job related documents. Knowledge of Military and Law Enforcement equipment and weapons systems interface with the end users and their equipment.

·         Minimum (2) two (4) four years formal training in manufacturing systems and textile cut and sew operations.

·         Must demonstrate aptitude with continuous improvement tools and statistics and analytical methods.

·         Bachelor Degree or Post-Doctoral Degree in Polymer Science and/ or Mechanical/ Industrial/ Chemical Engineering.

·         Team working ability.

·         Experience in failure analysis and processing simulation.

·         Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function for this position.

·         Must be authorized to work in the USA.


·         Sitting for long periods.

·         Dexterity and coordination to handle files and single pieces of paper.

·         Occasional lifting of items weighing up to (25) twenty-five pounds such as files, stacks of paper, reference and other materials.

·         Moving from place to place within the office; minimum reaching for items above and below desk level.

·         Strength, dexterity, coordination and vision to use keyboard and video display terminal for prolonged periods.
